Ye Olde Trail Tavern is the oldest building in Yellow Springs. It is believed to be the second oldest existing tavern in Ohio. Frank Hafner built the log cabin as his family home in 1844 before Yellow Springs was officially a village. Mr. Hafner's father was a soldier in Napoleon's army and was one of the few who survived the march on Moscow.
The Hafner family came to America in 1832. Frank Hafner was trained as a banker in Baltimore, Maryland. He came here in 1842 to manage the Neff Hotel, a 256 room resort that operated in what we now know as Glen Helen. After his marriage to Mary Ann Sroufe, Mr. Hafner operated a bakery out of this log cabin -Yellow Springs' first business. The family later moved to a larger, more modern home on Walnut St., keeping the bakery business in the log cabin.
Some say Ye Olde Trail Tavern has even more to offer than meets the eye; its ghostly ladies and other strange phenomena have for decades been featured in numberous magazines, newspapers and books.
Yellow Springs has changed a lot since Frank Hafner first established his business here, yet Ye Olde Trail Tavern continues to serve the public as Mr. Hafner first set out to do over 160 years ago.
